The government of Pakistan is finalising plans to upgrade the Skardu airport (KDU), so it can accord the status of International Airport to the Airport. Minister for Aviation Mohammad Mian Somroo told the upper house of parliament that “the present facilities at Skardu Airport do not cater for International flight operations.”
In order to upgrade facilities, and initiate planning, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, on 11th September 2018 constituted a board of officers. The board will formulate plans regarding construction of new runway, apron by PAF on a cost-sharing basis. New air traffic control tower and construction of a new terminal building is also part of the plan.

The Board of officers submitted its report and recommendations on 8 October 2018. Then the competent authority approved the recommendations of the Board of officers. Later on 30 November 2018 the CAA Board in its 177th meeting also approved cost-sharing by PAF at 40% of the actual cost for runway/apron to be paid in instalments after due diligence of the Development Committee of CAA Board.
Aviation minister said that planning, finance and other relevant divisions will be consulted on the design work is complete and a feasibility study is ready.
