Federal cabinet postpones decision on the final restructuring plan for PIA, including the debt burden

Prime Minister Imran Khan chairs a meeting on affairs of PIA at Islamabad on 8th June, 2020.

Pakistan’s federal cabinet once again delayed the decision on a long-awaited restructuring plan for Pakistan International Airlines. The airline’s Chief Executive Officer Air Marshal retired Arshad Mahmood Malik briefed the federal cabinet, about the finalised restructuring plan. But the cabinet has once again decided not to give a final go-ahead and referred the matter to Economics Coordination Committee to deliberate and decide how to make it happen. It is important to mention the fact that the government is delaying the decision for almost two years.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said it many times to that the government wants to make PIA self-sustainable “without seeking financial help from the government”. But this idea is facing chronic delays and the government is not looking serious in sorting out this issue anytime soon.
