PIA Airbus A320 brought back to life after 13 months

Third PIA grounded aircraft is brought back to life after 13 months. PIA claims it is done on its own resources.

Pakistan International Airlines has added another aircraft back into its fleet that was grounded for over 13 months. This time it is an Airbus A320 registration AP-BLV, that was grounded in May 2018. It is important to mention that this is an aircraft on dry lease and for 13 months PIA continued paying for this plane without earning a single penny from it. Earlier on 30th May PIA Boeing 777 registration, AP-BHV took to the skies. Same day PIA’s Airbus A320 AP-BLT also performed a test flight.

PIA received this aircraft on dry lease from Icelandic Aircraft Management.

PIA spokesperson Mashood Tajwar said “this is the second grounded aircraft after Boeing 777 that has been made operational and will now be part of PIA’s active fleet. After this, there is no grounded aircraft left behind except for mandatory routine maintenance checks.”
PIA acquired this Airbus A320 from Icelandic Aircraft Management (IAM) Aviation on dry lease for six years on October 25, 2014. The aircraft arrived from Prague to Karachi on May 5, 2015. In July 2016 the aircraft changed ownership and went to Aergo Capital, but the lease term continues with PIA, that is set to expire in October 2020.

AP-BLV is 13 year old aircraft that is with PIA for another one year.

According to PIA, “it had earlier requested the Government for financial support for reviving the grounded aircraft which though, did not materialize”. However, PIA has taken billions for the said purpose that were not spent on the right purpose in the past. PIA claims that “despite its financial constraints the airline utilizing its own resources managed to revive these aircraft”.

Due to this timely revival of 3 aircraft PIA didn’t get aircraft on a wet lease that used to be the case prior to 2018 when Musharraf Rasool Cyan stopped this practice. This saved costs during the last Hajj operation and will definitely go in significant cost savings for the airline.

This is how the plane looked in January 2019 as almost all key parts were removed.

PIA Boeing 777 AP-BHV remained was grounded for over 15 months costing the airline in billions of rupees losses. Repeated payments for the rehabilitation of this aircraft were diverted and as a result, this plane remained stuck outside. The issue was highlighted by a story published in BBC Urdu by Tahir Imran who revealed the plight of this plane.

پی آئی اے کا ایئر بس اے 320 طیارہ ایک سال سے زائدعرصہ گراؤنڈ رہنے کے بعد اڑان کے قابل ہو گیا۔ اس سے پہلے ایک بوئنگ777 طیارے کو ضروری مرمت کے بعد فضائی بیڑے میں شامل کیا گیا تھا یہ دوسرا طیارہ ہے جو ایک طویل عرصہ گراؤنڈ رہنے کے بعد پی آئی اے کے فضائی آپریشن میں شامل ہو گیا ہے۔ اس طیارے کی شمولیت کے بعد اب کوئی اور طیارہ گراؤنڈ نہیں ہے سوائے ان طیاروں کے جو معمول کی چیکنگ کے لئے گراؤنڈ کئے جاتے ہیں۔

پی آئی اے نے گراؤنڈ طیاروں کو آپریشنل کرنے کے لیے حکومت پاکستان سے مالی مدد کی درخواست کی تھی لیکن حکومت کی جانب سے اس پر کوئی خاطر خواہ عمل درآمد نہیں کیا گیا اور مشکل مالی حالات کے باوجود پی آئی اے نے اپنے وسائل کا موثر استعمال کرتے ہوئے مذکورہ طیارے کو فضائی بیڑے میں شامل کر دیا ہے۔ گزشتہ روز کی کامیاب آزمائشی پرواز کے بعد طیارے کا شیڈول پروازوں کے لئے استعمال شروع کر دیا گیا ہے۔ دو طیاروں کی بروقت بحالی کے بعد پی آئی اے حج آپریشن کے لئے ان اضافی طیاروں کی وجہ مزید آسانی ہو گئی ہے اور حج آپریشن ماضی کی طرح کرائے پرحاصل کردہ طیاروں کی بجائے مکمل طور پر پی آئی اے کے اپنے طیاروں سے کیا جارہا ہے حالانکہ اس سال حجاج کی تعداد بھی بڑھ کر تقریباً 80 ہزار ہو گئی ہے۔ اس سے یقینی طور پر پی آئی اے کے اخرجات میں خاطر خواہ بچت ہو گی۔
